One thing I wish I had noted in the caption – in contrast with Steve’s 2013 image, you will notice only the front of the church remains. The bulk of it was torn down for a condo development, but the front was kept for heritage preservation purposes and was going to be integrated into the development. However, I believe that developer declared bankruptcy. The project has since been resurrected with a new developer https://www.thespec.com/news-story/9186655-new-owners-get-city-green-light-to-add-a-31-storey-condo-tower-to-james-street-baptist-ruin/
James, nice catch. Lots of things go on in Hamilton that make you go hmm – that church was really beautiful and I think corrupt/sly developers horned in on it to essentially eliminate what should have been a heritage asset from the City’s fine inventory. Par for the course for Hamilton though, development at all costs , corrupt or not is the norm there.
