Great photo! I find these guys aren’t too fond of railfanners so its always a quick shot and leave. Lol.
Nice. What time was this at? I suspect these guys run at about the same time. Also curious if Martech runs this or not. Martech guys weren’t unfriendly when I saw them at Welland Pipe or Resolute.
Thanks both.
12:52 according to the file. They’d gone back and forth across the road at least a few times prior as well.
I too had a ‘problem’ with those guys at Oxy. This photo interests me because this is a locomotive I had not seen previously.
Good scouting there, James!!
Thanks Arnold.
To follow up on this discussion, I definitely got a “get the shot and leave as soon as possible” vibe there, even though I was on public property. I did see them make several trips across the road, but that was driving by for the most part. There is an individual on another site with quite a few shots of this unit though, so either they don’t mind him, he gets the shot and leaves quickly, or we are making a mountain out of a molehill.
I would definitely like to shoot it again on a sunny day though, but I was content with this nonetheless given its relative rarity. And hey, the clouds let me be on the north side which kept the pole behind the unit and let me include a bit of the plant structure itself, so it wasn’t all bad.
This SW-1000 ex DRGW 144, is beginning it’s 5th year at Oxy.
Thanks James. They’ve eluded me so far but I’ll try again some day when I’m bored. Niagara is far to go for action spread quite thin.
Good luck Steve. I know you’re a fan of the unique switchers. Would be kinda neat to see a CN transfer on the Chemical Spur too.
I must’ve been pretty lucky this day. I was busy for a solid 7 or 8 hours. Got 143 as soon as I arrived. It was held at Robbins where I shot 538/564. Then followed Trillium from Feeder to Port Colborne, got the CP transfer to CN around lunch, LTEX right after, then a late 331 left mid afternoon, and ended the day with a SB in Welland Yard (didn’t bother shooting it) and a CP transfer to Trillium. Kept me on my toes and I didn’t even bother with 422 (same as 538/564 anyways) or 421.
They seem to be out at noon hour every day from what I’ve seen.
James I guess that’s the difference. I don’t spend 8 hours at this, it’s quite rare for me to put a full day in because I travel so much for family, I don’t see the point of taking a day off work on something I can chance on later. I have *years* to get some of this and am not in a rush to get it.
And of course on weekends the critters are hard to get since they rarely work.
If I travel somewhere that’s a whole other matter but it’s usually more than 4 hours drive away.
We get our birthdays off every year without having to take a vacation day, so here’s where I spent mine. Had wanted to check out the area for a while and had never even shot Trillium.
Thanks for the info here. Worth wandering down there around the Noon Hour if there is actually going to be something happening in this dried up old Niagara.
Correcting my caption – CN L564 (Port Rob night job) does the transfer run from Port Rob to Oxy Vinyls, and they go right inside the plant. My caption states my previous assumption – that the little yard on the west side of the road is the interchange point, which turns out to be incorrect.
Hoppers get set off inside the gate, and thanks get set off a little South/East of that, and any lifts are there as well.
Tanks*, not thanks
2023 update… shot 1084 in october and 6089 here and definitely get your shot and leave vibe still reigns. Still nothing they can do if you are one public property but harass you. Cops should know better and should it ever come to this remember you have full rights to photograph anything you want from public property and nothing they can do about it. Nothing. Only exeption is military or defence installations.
Steve do you mean shot LTEX 1014 in October ?
1084 should be in Contrecoeur
Yes.
