Caption: Train 6, the "Inter-City Limited" from Chicago to Toronto and Montreal prepares to back into Hamilton in early 1962. If you look closely, you can see a crew member in the cab of the 4931 looking for the signal/watching the back-up move into Hamilton and the last car starting through the crossover to the westward track (remember, it was "right hand running" in those days prior to bi-directional CTC). Prior to April 29, 1962, trains to and from southwestern Ontario made station stops in Hamilton--backing to Bayview before continuing west and backing into Hamilton before continuing east. Trains to and from London (Nos. 80/83) Windsor (Nos. 9/18), and Chicago (Nos. 5/6 and 14/15) which did this had a three hour schedule between London and Toronto, compared to 2:10 or 2:15 for those which by-passed Hamilton (Nos. 75/82 to/from Sarnia). At the end of April 1962, the back-up move was eliminated for most trains.
