Submitted on the 24th anniversary of the Hyde Park train crash. I recommend the TSB Report about this mishap - http://www.bst-tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/rail/1995/r95s0021/r95s0021.asp
This is a non-telephoto view of the accident scene, seen from the Hyde Park Road overpass. It could be the day of the crash, or a day or more later. A westbound train is proceeding forward from the bottom right on the now-clear north track, with lead unit CN9470, CN9516, CN7213.
Accident cleanup must have been aided by the level ground, available siding track, and good road access at the western fringe of London ON. Three cranes are on scene and two backhoes are visible, with men at work on the damaged south track. Derailed HR616 CN 2105, lead unit on train 272, remains where it landed - it originally faced eastward toward the vantage point. Mangled railcars have been hauled away from the tracks. A pile of light coloured material, between the spur track and the north main, is thought to be from a hopper car destroyed in the crash. Train 272's damaged trailing unit LMSX 723 had been re-railed and moved to the siding (still tail-end first), along with a boxcar damaged in the crash. The facing train of autoracks looks like the main part of train 272, in which case rescue locomotives are on the front of it.

  1. If GEXR bought centralia to clinton jct in 1992 what was the line used for betwren hyde park and centralia in 1995?

  2. Steve, the line between Hyde Park and Ilderton existed until roughly 2000 as the “Ilderton Spur”, serving several local industries. The gap between Ilderton and Centralia was abandoned in 1988.

  3. Thank you.
