The new Amtrak "Maple Leaf" service from New York City to Toronto and return was only in its' 12th day of operation when I decided to wander down to Grimsby (I lived in St. Catharines at the time) to catch it at the station. What used to be known as Village Depot was no longer and I wanted to get a shot showing evidence of the old row of boxcars and the caboose at the near end on the right side of the photo before it all got hauled away. Grimsby station was home to a restaurant (Keystone Kellys) among other ventures back then when someone came up with the 'bright' (maybe 15 watt) idea of having a string of rail cars and having vendors sell out of each one. Sort of like a 'railroad plaza'. Well, the idea had its problems. For one thing it was very seasonal. And another, well, if there are no trains, where are the customers coming from? Boxcars sold trinkets, jewelry, souvenirs (!) ice cream and such. So, the great experiment didn't last long. Opened in 1977 and was sealed dead by 1979. Here it is spring 1981 and the cars and a lone caboose are still awaiting disposition.
Amtrak was a bit late on this evening, the Toronto-bound train arrived just before sunset. That was close.
