Nope, I can't time machine this, it's close, but it's not the same composition as Arnold's recently posted shot.  But I pulled it out anyway. 
I had a family event in the area (my first, actually) and I still end up here about once a year for something family related, but I made sure to capture the NS trains while in town. What bothers me the most is I could have easily photographed NS 327 (pictured) meeting 369 at Duf fas they waited for 327 to arrive before they could come back light power to make their lift. DARN - but I didn't know back then.  Here's the picture of 369 about an hour later almost ready to depart.

  1. Also the dreaded curse of NS 327/8 – 50% of the time it wasn’t a NS leader for me. I would have preferred the 4800 leading of course, but the crews clearly picked the best comfort! Don’t blame ‘em really!

  6. How does this not qualify as a time machine shot? It’s a great photo Stephen…even though it is not the same composition. That’s the challenge of time machining any photo really. But considering how much the landscape does change in 20+ years…you did good….especially with a bright orange BNSF leader!

  7. Todd, you nailed it, that’s the challenge of the time machine. I didn’t include the CASO right of way just outside of frame at right.

    Arnold shot at around 35mm I think.. I shot at 80mm (50mm fixed lens cropped)

    Vastly different focal length and no way to uncrop it to look the same.

    Someone could still do it with the NS transfer today, so let’s see if the challenge is taken up :)

  8. I think the parameters for Time Machine are causing the gun to shoot your foot. There’s a lot of variables that would prevent re-creating certain situations ( buildings gone, tracks removed, tree growth…). So why does your photo not qualify in the simplistic sense ?

  9. Thats fine and dandy Mercer, buildings and other things can come and go. It doesnt have to be the same in terms of whats in the photo.

    But look at the photos in there now. If you overlaid each photo pairing or triplet in the time machine everthing lines up perfectly. And everything that was or is no longer in the scene is also included, or not because it may or may not be there but there is no guesswork as the frames are otherwise identical.

    I did not include the caso at right for example as compared to Arnold. Youd have to guess what the caso side looked like in 2006. At least thats how i see it.

    Some photographers went to great lengths to replicate, exactly, a photo in the database. David Vincents required two trips up north and asked the conductor to spot the train for him while holding a print out of Arnolds cp budds. Of course I couldnt do that in this case.
