Almost looks like spring is coming. Bit of an early melt this Sunday toward the last of February, and weather breaks a little bit in late day. Combined with an early Starlite (Toronto to Hamilton version) it made for a good close to the afternoon. TH&B 71, 401, 74 and an unidentified CP 87xx make up the power for today. In a couple of hours most likely that same power, at least the TH&B, would make the return trip with Toronto traffic. By then, the 'Sidekick' (seen in bottom corner at my car) and Bill McArthur, (parked beside me) and I would make our usual Sunday trip out for dinner. Systematic Sundays back then, and always good times.

  1. Wow! Ill fated TH&B No. 71 and an all Detroit rubber tired line up! Do you recall the name(s) of the local diners frequented? Please keep up the nostalgia.

  2. Not really. There used to be Sir Pizza on Plains Rd, now a tire store. And a digusting Red Barn, which is now a fitness place, I think; but it may have already been gone by 1978. On this particular day, we went to the place we frequented more than any other; the “Eat ‘n Putt, a restaurant and amusement park, actually VERY good; on Highway 8 just north of the 401. A stone’s throw up the road from another fav, the Knotty Pine. Loved these places even though I lived in St. Catharines at the time.

  3. With all the changes on Plains Rd these days one has to wonder how many establishments from the ‘ol days are still around.

Can’t be all that many. Burlington is a developers paradise right now.

  4. The ‘Red Barns’ must have been incredibly well built structures! One can still see the re-purposed buildings all over Southern Ontario. Recall the Millionaire Drive on Upper James??

  5. Stuart: I don’t recall the seeing the Upper James Millionaire, but frequented the one at Queenston Rd/Kenora near Stoney Creek back in the ’60s. There is still a former Red Barn building at the corner of New St and Guelph Line in Burlington.
You asked of restaurants; the Russell Williams on Plains Rd seems like it has been there forever. Almost, actually, since about 1932.

  6. Love Russell Williams! Might be able to justify my own parking spot shortly!

  7. R.W. has always been a good place. Good prices, good food. I just find the booths a little tight for more than two people. Not that I am getting any bigger or anything……..
