Caption: Yes, this old stone station looks a lot like the one over at Port Hope and many others that used to stand along the line between Toronto and Montreal. It should. Same builder, same plans. At St. Mary's Jct the line from Stratford branched off, one to London the other over to Sarnia. This was once a very busy place, with a turntable, warehouses, stock pens as well as a large roundhouse. It even had Thomas Edison, the inventor, working here for a bit; but he quit after being caught sleeping on the job. The story is on a plaque recently erected in front of the station along with a tribute to the historical significance of this beautiful old building, which still stands in situ, surrounded by fencing and a heck of a lot of foliage. It is quiet around there now, although new housing is closing in on the once wide open farmlands...........the line to London still active but the other track was taken up in 1990.
