Caption: The most impressive bridge on the Canadian side of the White Pass & Yukon Route seems to be this one, crossing the narrows between Bennett Lake and Nares Lake at Carcross Yukon. Carcross is a contraction of caribou crossing, which presumably was a common occurrence here when the town was named.

It appears that this bridge was built as a swing bridge, so that it would not impede the riverboat traffic on this waterway. Riverboat transportation has ended, and there are fixed bridges either side of this one - for the Yukon Highway and a footbridge. So it made sense to strengthen this railway bridge from below with additional steel and supports, rendering it immovable. Note also the conduit pipes and wires that crossing the bridge.

Carcross WP&YR station is a short distance behind this viewpoint, with the end of in-service track probably less than a mile past that. The active track can be seen curving to the right, as the line follows the east shore of Lake Bennett southward toward Bennett, Fraser, and Skagway.
