Lets just say this image is for those on Railpictures that either reside on PEI or are frequent visitors, as this is just a general scene. It features the CN Summerside station (now a library)and a boarding car train left on the southernmost track in the diminutive 'yard'. Some of the downtown business district is on the right and in the distance ahead of the cars is the track running left to the pier, which was active at this time as I saw CN 1750 switching and a ship at anchor. A nice old time scene, as the railroad is now gone from the Island (1989) and the track area is now parking lot for the Loyalist Lakeview Resort. The mainline is now Confederation Trail.

  1. Nice to see the classic boarding car consist in the shot.

  2. Even as someone who has never even been to PEI, I have to say I’m a huge fan of this. Such a charming scene. The modest downtown, classic cars, beautiful station. (Good to hear it still stands)Imagining that this was just another day on the island, like a glimpse in to the lives of the townspeople for whom this was their everyday. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Historic pictures are always good.

  4. Davis!!!! Get ye to the Island!!! With the exception of Charlottetown’s urban sprawl, the whole province is charming. Well, maybe not in July and August, but hey, they do need their tourists. Thanks for your comments.

  5. Your photo captures island railroading quite well. My eyes were drawn to the cylindrical concrete battery well with metal lid, it was used to house primary batteries, mostly likely the start for a nearby crossing protection. The poleline looks well maintained with almost a fully populated crossarm. The tower at the end of the station is most likely part of the Train to Wayside Radio System.
