Caption: CN and CP both purchased the 6-axle 2400hp Fairbanks Morse H24-66 "Train Master" in the 1950's in the form of one unit each, but only CP made a follow-up order. CN's only Train Master was delivered as 3000 (later renumbered 2900), and built at FM's plant in Beloit, Wisconsin in 1955 and shipped to Kingston later that year for completion. In its brief career with CN it was used for many purposes, briefly in Montreal and mainly around Toronto. Here 2900 is pictured sitting in Mimico in 1961, probably in transfer service (Mimico to Danforth Yard), or helper service on Scarborough Hill. The unit was retired in February 1966, and scrapped in 1968.

Other than the ALCO cab units, I don’t think there has been a Diesel locomotive that imparts a feeling of grandeur, quite like the FM Trainmaster. Thank gosh the CP preserved one, or they’d all be extinct. The original CNR paint scheme only enhances the size and design. Thanks for posting this.
I have an HO scale Athearn model that I painted for this unit.
