Caption: During the last months of CP operation, "the Canadian" heads west on the Laggan sub. In a few minutes, GP9s 8514 and 8522 will pass through the spiral tunnels and bring their eight car train into Field. It is still the "shoulder" season ahead of summer's peak and so No. 1 has a deadhead coach, baggage-dormitory, one coach, a Skyline car, a diner, two Manor sleepers and the "Park" dome-observation car. VIA took over CP's passenger operations on October 29, 1978.

The sleeper behind the diner appears to be a Château sleeper. At that time, the diner and Château sleeper operated to and from Toronto; the Manor sleeper and Park car to and from Montreal.
