It has been a long time since I shot this photo, just over 41 years ago, and my caption is open to correction. I believe these GP40-2L Widecabs, built in early 1974, are drained and stored due to a downturn of traffic a couple of years later. The column consists of CN 9408 thru 9419, minus the 9412 which was off on another track with long end damage due to a minor derailment of some sort. No idea how long these units remained stored.

    Is the 60/17 on the cab side about these units being geared differently? A likely reason they are sidelined.

    The units were in storage due to a downturn in traffic. Gear ratios normally would not affect if a locomotive is stored or not.

    I recall reading that storing the almost new units some how preserved a portion of the GMD warranty. Several were also stored inside NSC in Hamilton.

    NO difference in cab width…it’s the NOSE that is wider…
    …a misnomer from the beginning perpetuated by railfans…
