This was the very first run of the "Nanticoke" steel train running via the TH&B down to Lake Erie. A historic occasion for the fans back then, although I must admit I saw very few chasers. Perhaps I shot where they didn't, or perhaps most were at work, as this was a Monday. I picked up the train right at Aberdeen Yd, and then grabbed this shot at Leland St (just south of Mac University) right before the old branch to Steetley (CCCS) which was former Hamilton & Dundas line) went off to the North into Dundas itself. I picked up the train again near Jerseyville and into Brantford, then south to Waterford. After all, a First Run deserves the attention. Power was B&O 4815, C&O 3885 and 4828. (Limited TH&B roster had no power to spare) This was the first run of anything over this stretch of track in a while, note the dust and dirt accumulation on the railhead.

  1. Excellent. I wanted to shoot something here but nothing really worked that end of the yard. Then the tracks were ripped out a few years ago at any remaining crossings and the yard stubbed before the trail.

Nice work and glad some of the gang was there for the first train.

  2. Miss the white flags. Weren’t they for an Extra?

  3. Beautiful image! Always wished the Waterford sub lasted longer.

  4. Masterful image ! This historical event so nicely presented and explained, now approaching 40 years, never tire seeing these pictures. More Mr. Mooney, may we please have more John

  5. Great capture. TH&B crossing signal masts painted white, with TH&B and mileage in black always looked good.
