My view from pusher power assisting a south bound coal train "up the mountain" on a bleak winter afternoon. If I recall, at the time most coal trains were 98 loads. We pushed on the caboose that had strengthen frames etc for coal service. The crew members would ride one of the pusher units instead of the caboose as per railway requirements for safety. The three SD40-2's that we had were in run 8 for most of the time grinding up the hill. It could get quite gassy and poor air in the Wolverine tunnel particularly if the leading power was diesels. If all the units were electric the air quality was good in the tunnel.
