Railpictures.ca - Bruce Mercer Photo: As if CP didn’t have their own problems dealing with a locomotive shortage and leased engines from several sources; Penn Central couldn’t keep their end of the bargain when it came to powering the Buffalo/Toronto service. So on this bitter February morning, somewhere between Brimley and McCowan, I managed to get close enough to the right of way as CP sent 7064 out to Leaside to rescue the ailing KINNEAR. 1 or 2 of the classic PC engines had finally died and the tonnage was too great to keep the train moving. So F7′s 1747 and 1729, with GP9B 3829 are getting a helping hand from MLW’s finest in order to land the train in the Receiving bowl. Note the piggyback business which was hit and miss on this train starting after mid 1971 ( if I recall). Starlight & Kinnear trains often needed a “push” through this area as did a number of trains coming off the Galt Sub from London. Sometimes, even with sufficient power for the tonnage, according to the book at least, trains would stall anyway. I think a lot of the older power just couldn’t handle what it was once rated for.
