Caption: GAFF TOPSAIL - Terra Transport Mixed Extra 945 West approaches the hill known as 'Gaff Topsail' on April 20, 1987 while en route to the Flag Stop of the same name. Synonymous with Newfoundland Railway lore, the Gaff Topsail was one of four hills rising up from the plateau being named after the sails on a ship, the others being Main, Mizzen and Fore. Now just west of Summit, the train had already begun her 70 mile descent to near sea level at Corner Brook and the photographer and his girlfriend would continue to see wonderful vista such as this on their first Newfoundland train ride, making memories to last forever.
