CP 4050-8431-4466 on train ‘OOD’ at Guelph Jct May 16/73.
The 'OOD' ( Oshawa Oakville Detroit ) was a dedicated auto industry train that could be counted upon to show up in the same timeframe every day with whatever power was necessary to keep it on schedule. This brightly painted lashup was irresistible as it worked throttle wide open to make the top of the grade with 76 cars.

  1. Wow!

  2. What a great scene, Bruce. It doesn’t get much better than this. Thanks for sharing.

  3. 76 long cars back in 1973 = roughly 150 plus car lengths …quite long for that era.
    Great pic.

  4. Wow……….. curious…. how did it go from oshawa to Oakville to Detroit going up the Galt sub hill?

  5. Great power lashup!!

  6. @snake..not that many cars mister just over 7000 ft in length.

  7. Great pic..love the lashup. Way back in a more innocent time..before graffiti and you could load vehicles in open cars..Sigh

  8. What a great lash up!

  9. Steve – Perhaps I have the name slightly incorrect, it may have been Oshawa OBICO Detroit. But regardless, the Oakville Ford traffic would be brought to Obico and lifted by this train. It’s been about 20 years since CP had switching jobs based at CN Oakville Yard, and slightly less than 20 years since CP operated any sort of roadswitcher on the Oakville Sub. for local business.

  10. CP had had an overnight Oakville Ford turn..it used to utilize the Canadian’s power…many a morning it would be stuck eastbound in Clarkson yard waiting for GO traffic to subside circa early 70′s at Clarkson Road.

  11. All I can say Bruce is, “Yeow!!!!”….. :-)

  12. The Oakville Ford traffic got lifted at Obico, I’d say usually out of the south service track down to the 427….either way Stephen it’s an “O” !

    Great shot mongo!

  13. Thanks guys – interesting times back then for sure. Love it.

  14. OOD was Oshawa Oakville Detroit, but empty multilevels are an oddity on that train. That train usually ran as a van hop from Toronto yard to Lambton where it lifted cars brought in by locals off the Oakville Sub as well as cars brought over by the Agincourt transfer from Toronto Yard. Most traffic on that train was hi cube boxcars and loaded multilevels. The empties were usually on 903, “Makeup” 903, 957 or Extra Wests.
