While CN 4774 is in dire need of a new paint job, trailing unit 7255 looks very fresh. It's not very often that 7200 series GP9RMs get to take to the mainline, but since many have been bumped out of yard service they are occasionally assigned to local assignments. The new housing development in south Milton is slowly taking shape in the background, as CN local #551 rolls into town with gondolas for Triple M on the old glass lead and tank cars for Recochem off the main at Mansewood.

  1. Great shot. Actually the 7200′s have not been bumped from yard service, its just that CN will throw together whatever they have handy and serviceable at the time. Noting that 7255 is a beltpack unit, it won’t be long until its back in yard service.
Ironically those new houses are being built right across the track where CN is putting its new intermodal yard.

  2. The zebra paint always puts a smile on my face when it gets well aged. The black becomes white and the white turns to a rusty colour. Doing almost a reversal of the original paint.

  3. ngineered4u- Are they really going through with the project? I heard that the tree huggers temporarily stopped the yard from being build. Not sure what to believe these days :’)

  4. Honestly, we are told that its a go and there has been some activity near the tracks. I do know there have been many protests by the township of Milton and I have seen protestors on the bridge when I go by on my train. The fact is, CN bought that land way before any homes were built, but i am sure the home builders failed to mention that to new home buyers!

  5. There is some digging going on over where the yard will be, but not too much. Hopefully the new homes have good sound proofing LOL.

  6. Lucas, I have no doubt it’s going though. How can you allow urban residential sprawl development and not allow industrial development and have an environmental argument to hold onto?

When I was ‘fanning in the area in 2001-2003 there were signs protesting the potential terminal “GO HOME CN” along Tremaine Rd. It’s been in the plans for more than a decade or two and Milton City Council should be squarely to blame to allow residential development to abut so close to something zoned and planned industrial.

But I personally believe Milton gets what they deserve – it’s not like they are unfriendly to developers. The place is a cookie cutter paradise save for the downtown core and what little remains of the rural areas.

  7. I don’t see much of an environmental argument either, considering that trains are a very good alternative to trucks (from a GHG reduction perspective). That is great news that CN is building an intermodal facility. Hopefully that means more jobs, and of course, more trains.

  8. I am not sure how many jobs there will be? Obviously ground support for the intermodal yard. Not so many more trains.
CN put its plans on hold after the downturn in traffic. One manager told a colleague of mine that the yard would be completed by the end of 2017…i doubt it.
CN has told the public and the township this will be a small satellite yard and nothing the size of BIT. We all know railroads never lie :-)
