Awhhh....for the days when one could get up and personal with the International Bridge at Fort Erie. Those days are long gone. It is now the land of border patrols via fancy cameras, not a place to wander up to. This image shows something else we see no longer .......... those little reliable GMD switchers. This, along with others in the series, were renumbered to 7700s in 1985 and retired early 1990s. Note the sign regarding 'police' on the right. The local kids scribbled that, in retaliation to the fact they were chased out of the area regularly back then for using the bridge as a diving board into the river on hot days. I do not know what the cargo is that has crossed the bridge, perhaps an industrial pressure vessel of some sort?

  1. Nice one Arnold. There is even a scanner (I forget their proper name) for reading the barcodes on the cars as they come rolling off the bridge. I have not seen one of them in years.

  2. ACI = automatic car identification.

  3. And I didn’t even realize it. Yes, NOW I recall those things. Thanks for pointing it out.

  4. Very interesting, Mike. Since they were discontinued in 1978, this one might still have been operative. What was the speed restriction for rolling by those readers? I remember all the complaints about the ‘tags’ being dirty or damaged, but am shocked it was THAT long ago.
