The mid 2000s were a busy and interesting time for the area I considered as the "funnel", this is CN's tracks between Burlington West and Bayview Jct. At this time CN was busy installing the new third track as well as eliminating the plant at Aldershot West in favour of a new plant a mile west called Snake. This extended the ladder track at Aldershot yard by around a mile to the west. In this photo power hungry CN has borrowed a pair of units off CSX to power train 390. The CEFX SD40-3 was originally a SP SD45, while the trailing CSX unit is a SD50. The crane in the background is carefully removing the signal bridge that protected the now eliminated cross overs at Aldershot West. In the foreground is the road bed for the new third track.

  1. Sadly, with the King Road under pass in place your location currently (October 1,2016) is
covered by a contractor’s equipment and a high fence fronting the “new” third track now in situ, photos are not easily possible.

  2. This location is at the end of Howard Road, never the less it is very overgrown now, not to mention the lack of trains today as compared to back then.

  3. King rd… Howard rd.. all done for. I managed to shoot at both locations over the years. Over time everything will be fenced in – look at Hamilton and the lack of fencing – that’s going to change.

  4. I guess we better invest in a drone like Bill M
    LOL

  5. Drones are the way of the future for railfanning. There’s good and bad in that of course, and shooting from the ground does have a nicer feel to it in my opinion. However, weeds encroaching on ROW’s and fences have eliminated many great locations over the years. When a compact drone is able to safely carry around a DSLR, many railfans will have them. Unless jet pack technology becomes cheaper. :)
