    The cinder ballast on the foreground track is something that is rare these days.

    It is! Thanks for noticing that. Too bad this track is all out of service now.

    Guelph CN XV yard has cinder ballast on the west end, while the east end has been all re-ballasted and upgraded.

    Guelph’s CN XW yard also has cinder ballast and has not (yet) been upgraded. One can pick up a lot of coal in those yards too.. naturally
