Caption: So that is how they do it. In order that the bridge be ready for the building of the Red Hill Valley Parkway in Hamilton, the new railroad bridge is built in its entirety, then the excavation is filled in again. Never knew that. Must be a reason why it is not left mostly open. After all, in order to put down the road they have to dig again.....Anyway, a few years before the roadway down the hill in Hamilton was opened, I shot this image of Buffalo-bound #328 with BNSF 4813 and 5491 crossing the "bridge over nothing" before going to work my afternoon shift that day. A the time I was thinking the overall scene might be more of history than the BNSF units would eventually be along here ......

Oh the pumpkins… so common back then.
Arnold, you got the date of this photo as 2007, but the NS trains were cancelled in December of 2006
Now how the heck did I do that? It should read 2004. Thanks, Docta. I shall get one of the RP slaves to attend to the matter. )
i was always amazed at how ns really milked their former customers on the st thomas and eastern (grain traffic) and cn (auto frames from formet, these were for hummers!) but was suprised it really didn’t amount to much. heck the frames could have been substantial if the right contract came about..
i was always curious if ns switched frames from formet in st thomas or if cn brought the cars to the yard.
First of all great shot! I love it…bridge over nothing!!
CANDO switches the Formet plant, has for a long time, as well CANDO looks after loading the actual frame flats.
If I remember correctly a CN job from Talbotville came across town to get the NS traffic (if any) at Formet.
CN guys can jump in and correct me here!
Thanks, was acutely aware of CANDO but was still wondering if NS came across town or if CN. Thanks for the notes.
The only reason I can think of for filling in the underpass would be to prevent it from becoming a lake if the surrounding roadway hadn’t been excavated and storm drains installed. Definitely odd.
this was the red hill in 2010 or 2011, my photo… was near the train bridge but no trains (see photo)
