Caption: At 1428hrs, the westbound "Super Continental" pulls out of the VIA station in downtown Edmonton. At this time, the loop track off the CN mainline to the north was still intact. That would not last. Big change was about to happen as virtually all of the RR activities in the downtown were about to end. There was a yard in the opposite direction of this scene that served a few industries in the area, but seemed to mostly handle interchange with CP. Once that yard was abandoned, the bridge that I was standing on would be removed. VIA still used the downtown station for a number of years to come, however it required a reverse move from (or to) East Junction (to the NE of here).
The first re-development of the land made available by lifting the rails was the Grant MacEwan College (now a University).
