Ditch lights on leased B&O GP40? CP must have temporarily installed these while on lease.
CP must have had these on a longer lease, or the cab was deemed fit to justify putting in the ditch lights. I don’t think that I have even photographed leased units leading. Perhaps I should have been more patient and waited to see if this power set was to go on an eastbound train.
I always wondered why CP leased GP40 Chessies on long hauls when they were deep into the SD40-2 era. Must have been great to see one this far from home.
All 3 locomotives are GP’s. CP tended to use these on their “locals”. I am most familiar with the Laggan Sub, where the Exshaw turn operated, however, I did see similar GP sets on train operating south of Calgary. I don’t know if they deliberately leased GP’s or they took what was available. Certainly four-axled locomotives were more common in Calgary (CSX, and CR were the two biggest suppliers at the time), but I would soon see QNS&L SD-40′s plying the Laggan.
Nice shot. I have also always found that diamond crossing on the intermodal spurs amusing. If a model railroader did that, he’d be accused of being “un-prototypical”!
Robin, I never noticed that before. It seems rather bazaar.
I might look at some other photos that I have of the area to see if I can piece the layout together.
