Last week I headed to Nanticoke to try and get some photos of the 'local' switching cars at the Imperial Oil refinery. Not only did I walk away without a good photo of the train...but again, came away with another warning. After some photos I have seen on rp.ca recently, as well as remembering some risks I have taken to get the great shot, I came across this photo I took last fall.


With a forlorn CN 4784 sitting lonely in a surprisingly near empty yard, heed to the signs fellow rp.ca photographers! Stay safe.

  1. Where are you standing that you are receiving warnings at Nanticoke?

    In all the years I have been going there I have been talked to once by a refinery security guard who just asked that I stay on public property (the road). He even told me when SOR 593 (the refinery switcher) would be making their next moves!

    I have also had OPP drive by me multiple times but they never say anything to me…

  3. @Joseph Bishop….warning came from Imperial Oil this time. It’s all because my camera was pointed towards their facility as I was trying to get an industrial shot wit the train. Had to explain why I was there…told him too that I was on a public road…and had no interest in the operations or functions of Imperial Oil. I was there for the train only.

    @Brad Ketchen…I hadn’t seen this Geep 38 in quite awhile. Agreed…needs a good paint job…but figured too may not see another one anytime soon.

  4. I see the odd GP38 switch the Suncor yard in Clarkson out of Aldershot. I always wondered why CN wouldn’t repaint them? But then again they are still running 1950 era GP9m’s.

  5. Interesting, I guess that is similar to the warning I received at EMD London many moons ago about shooting next-door to the defence contractor.

    I wouldn’t let it deter you though, just them being diligent :)

  6. Legally, they have no right to forbid you to photograph their facility. Nothing stopping them from telling you not to, don’t mean you can’t.

    If it’s visible from public property, go to town, you are fully within your rights.

    Your rights change dramatically when standing on private property.
