Former Newfoundland Railway sleeping car "Twillingate" is seen at St. John's, Newfoundland on July 29, 1952. It continued to carry NR colours until 1955 at which time it was repainted in CN livery. Built in 1938 by National Steel Car, it was of all-steel construction, and was fitted out with 8 sections and 1 drawing room. Converted to work service in 1970 (as CN 5011), it was retired and moved to Corner Brook where it joined the Railway Society of Newfoundland museum at Humbermouth station. For many years it bore the name "Humber" but in 1999 its original name was restored.

In retrospect, I wish now that I had also paid attention to the elderly coach to the right wearing faded NR paint.

  1. Thank you for posting this wonderful image Mr. Bernard! It’s great to see that beautiful paint scheme in glorious colour. (Note the green ‘Tilted Wafer’ of the NFLD RAILWAY, our pre-confederation steam engines also wore it on their tenders before takeover by the CNR) – Sincerely, Kenneth G. Pieroway

  2. Mr. Bernard, are you able to identify either the word or the letters on your original copy of the car in front of the ‘Twillingate’? I am trying to see exactly which car/sleeper it is?
    Thank you so much!
    Sincerely,
    Kenneth G. Pieroway

  3. Sorry, but I am unable to identify the car to the right of Twillingate. It appears to have a name as does what little can be seen of its window arrangement which would confirm that it is a sleeping car.
