Caption: Over the years I've photographed trains there have been many interesting and odd-ball diesel units leased by Canadian Railways during power shortages. CP was noted for some of the most desperate attempts to find almost anything in running order. I consider the leasing by CP of a dozen or so CN MLW RS-18s in the spring of 1987 the most unusual situation. Rumors were they would become part of CP's locomotive rebuilding plan. CP 1842 had the car body from CN 3642. Two others (CN 3628 & CN 3663) were bought in 1992 but scrapped in 1995. The rest were returned to CN. In this photo we see CP 4742 leading CN 3659 and 3622 on an eastbound about two miles east of Bowmanville near the "fruit house".
