RLHH 3403 and RLHH 3404 back a cut of cars into the Purina Kitty Litter Plant in Caledonia early on a February morning. I was heading in to school when I saw the gates flashing down at Mines Road, a quick check found 597's train tied down outside of town suggesting that they were working one of the local industries. I headed back into town and found them easily, well worth being late for an 8:30 lecture in my books!

  1. Get your shots of this place while you can because rumour has it that it won’t be around much longer! (at least for rail service)

  2. @angelok do you mean Purina or the whole Caledonia area?

  3. Brad, Angelo is referring to the Purina Plant itself. But if Purina ceases shipping by rail, there won’t be much industry at all in Caledonia to be served.

The Georgia Pacific plant has been idle for over a year now. So that has left the Purina Plant and the Nicholson and Cates Lumber Yard being served by rail.

I’m glad over the years I was able to get 596 working both GP and Purina on many occasions.

    Back when 596 was still a Monday-Friday job: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=4261

  4. Very nice Joe. Great effect with the lighting too.

  5. The rumour appears to have come true Angelo, I was through Caledonia this afternoon…the Purina Plant is totally cleared out of hopper cars and there are no cars in the yard up by the station earlier. I have never seen either of those tracks empty in my 20 years of living in Caledonia.

Word has it their production has been scaled back to almost nothing with most workers laid off for the time being…time will tell but it doesn’t look good.
