GEXR 431 rolls past Breslau, Ontario, prepared to head into Kitchener Yard. Even though they're not seen in the picture, for those who don't know yet, the Guelph Sub now has working CTC signals installed and functioning. It's almost werid seeing the signals flashing and doing their thing, considering I haven't seen signals on the line before. The usual trio of EMD power is on the head end.

  3. CTC signals could be a required upgrade for GO train operations. Do you know if there are signals in operation between Kitchener and London ? (The other JP)

    VIA is the one who wanted/is payinG for the CTC for safety reasons. In 2005, when the GEXR used cellphones for OCS clearences, two head-on collisions nearly occured, both involving VIA trains. Around 2007, radio towers were installed and OCS used radios, but CTC was planned. GO/Metrolinx likely became a partner with the CTC, but I’m not sure.

  5. Yeah I was just reading about the near collision between 87 and 518 the other day

  6. CTC was paid for 100% by VIA Rail.

    The second near-miss wasn’t considered a major incident and isn’t on the public TSB website, but a coal car got loose from Kitchener yard, rolled down to approximately HWY 7 overpass and 84 had to stop, shove the coal car to Shantz, set it off then continue on their way. Good thing the Breslau bridge was 10 MPH at the time and straight track or it could have been much worse.

    CTC is 100% in service now. Good news is the signals are approach lit, but they light up as soon as a train passes the previous control point in either direction.. which is a good 10+ miles so at least 10 to 20 minutes of warning
