I've always subscribed to that old ditty about life being a book of many chapters. One chapter of my days that I wish was a little thicker was the period I spent around Parry Sound. In 1984 I decided this place had some potential (to say the least) and I drove north to the Sound whenever I had a chance up until early 1987 when all of a sudden I started travelling to Kentucky and the remnants of the Southern Rwy. I'm betting Parry is still a great place to shoot trains; but my chapter there closed down rather quickly with the passing of Jimmie Bell, CP Station agent. Without a cozy place to hang out and drink coffee any more, it just wasn't the same. He always provided me with advance notice of anything approaching; and this photo is an example. "Got a 4700 leading, Arnold, and there may be one or two trailing," he probably hollered this day so I took off down to the Town Dock. With the onslaught of SD40s around this time, MLW lashups were not as common as one might think. Here is CP 4741, 4735 and 4553 northbound on a warm spring morning. I'm standing out by the "GULF" fuelling area. I think it is a hangout for seaplanes by that restaurant now.
