Caption: Due to a bridge fire, derailment and subsequent collapse on the Rainy Sub, the western Canada to Chicago corridor was abruptly shut down. The Eastern Region picked up the slack operating over 30 trains a day across the Northern Ontario District, from Winnipeg to Toronto with many of the trains operating south of the lakes back to Chicago. Here we see part of the core package, M 31441 27 getting underway after waiting for X 10131 29 to clear into the siding at Sparrow Lake. Just about every siding had a northbound tucked away for a fleet of three southbounds (trains at Dock Siding, 2 at Medora, Woodward, Sparrow Lake, Smail and Brechin East!). Providing the power for this 22,000 ton, 10,000 foot train are three AC units, CN 2868, CN 8103 and mid train DP CN 2836.
