On a murky evening in 1978, a CN freight train with MLW power heads west past Fort York in this view from Strachan Avenue. The train is about to cross the Wharf Lead that led south from Parkdale to the waterfront, originally the old Toronto, Grey & Bruce Ry. narrow gauge mainline to the Queens Wharf. On the north side of the tracks is the old Inglis plant, on the left is the CNE siding.

  1. Great shot! Now that I live here we don’t get to see freights on the Weston sub let alone MLW’s! Thanks for this one. :)

  2. Nice, and with Cabin E tower too. All hipsters and condos now!

  3. Amazing shot! Didn’t even know there was a diamond there.

  4. Wow, awesome shot. 3 years before I hired on at CN. Can’t believe how much things have changed since you too this shot! Beautiful.

  5. Interesting to see what this location on the Oakville Sub looked like way back when. I cannot even imagine this scene due to how much changed in so little time! If one looks carefully you can see Exhibition Station adjacent to Dufferin St.

  6. I think that intersecting line was operated by CP & it led to “Fez City”, anyone know for sure? I heard Fez City was so named because a lot of circus trains went down there & they had association with the Shriners.

  7. RonaldB, yep, that’s the old TG&B trackage (CP Wharf Lead) that lead down to Molsons, CBM/St. Marys cement at Fleet Street (where the old Fez City yard was) and connected to the Central Harbour Terminals trackage along Queens Quay via a connecting track that ran under the Gardiner Expressway and past Loblaws.

The diamonds here at CN “Cabin E” were removed in 1984 (along with Cabin E interlocking tower, visible in the distance) and replaced with a set of crossovers that CP the used, and the interlocking renamed “Fort York”.
