On a forgotten spur on the (north)western edge of Orangeville lies CP 360847. An old CP ballast dump, not likely to see use anytime soon (although there was a load of ballast in it...).The picture speaks abandonment to me, grass grows tall between the rails and shrubs and trees are starting to grow on the final stretch of the spur in the background. The switch appears to have been spiked towards where this car sits as the target has been removed. I wonder what has happened in the time between posting this (Nov 2014) and since taking the shot...

  1. In Satellite view there looks like a cut of cars there…possibly tank cars. Maybe they reinstated the spur?

  2. From my colleagues at the Yahoo Group “Bruce Railways”:

“That car was in Snelgrove a few weeks back. Not so many years ago it was in good shape, but now it’s heavily tagged.

As for that spur, [looking at the Google satellite view] it clearly once went across C Line and then turned southeast, but I have no idea what customer would have been at the end of it.”

  3. The aerial imagery could be outdated – judging from the shadows there are 3 low cars (gondolas likely) and a hopper. The factory to the west (where the hopper is spotted in the above photo) is apparently Orangeville Hydro, doubtful if they get anything at all by rail. The factory to the east (to the left out of frame) was Performance Packaging (now Direct Plastics, doesn’t get rail service anymore – likely got center-flow hoppers spotted on the main spur).

I’m guessing this car might be OBRY’s own now, it’s since been spotted at Orangeville yard once in a while. Maybe it’s tucked away up here out of the way when not in use.

  4. @MrDan you’re right they are gondolas, the shadows threw me off (only the shadow knows ;) . Could the hopper at then end be thee Gondola in question?
