For whatever reason, AMTK 823 was disabled on its way to Toronto from the USA as #98 the night before, spotted going by from out the upstairs window at our home by my ever-nosey sidekick (hah!!)with CSX power on the lead. Otherwise I would not known of this train. (She likes to take credit for being the first 'fan to see this lashup) So we knew it would be coming back the following day; as pictured here passing St. Catharines Station. It was a "working" day for me, we were on the picket lines in Stoney Creek, so when it was AMTK time I broke away for 'washroom and coffee break' and most fellow employees questioned why it took over an hour and a half to perform those duties. Heck, I wasn't passing up this chance for such head end power on what normally to me is a dull train. If you look closely at the photo, you will see a special car on the rear. It is "West Texas and Buffalo Steamship and Railway Company" coach, the 'Dagny Taggart'. If I hadn't snagged a shot of that, I would have never remembered the name. :o) Oh; second unit is CSX 2804.

  1. Amtrak wan’t exactly elated with the P40′s, and they have spent much time out of service at Beechgrove, IN. IIRC, only a handful are running currently, so perhaps the 823′s ailment was aiding the decision to store them. If they had a surplus of power, fine, but typically one places the bad actors in storage first.

Always nice to see Geep’s on passenger trains, even if they are in CSX paint. Great catch and nicely done finding someone that gets it… or at least tolerates the foaming.

  2. So where was she when the FL9 made it to Toronto and back?

  3. The phrase “amazing catch” is bandied about too often today but this one is amazing.
How come you didn’t try to get it closer to your work? Oh well; lots of water and trains under the bridge since.

  4. CTP: I did catch this train twice before it made St. Catharines. This location has always been my favourite along the line so this was the objective. If I hadn’t been concerned someone might miss me at work, I would have gone on to Niagara Falls.

  5. Rob – when did the FL9 run to Toronto and back?

  6. @Mr. Host – ages ago, I don’t recall the date. As far as I know a few people saw it, but no one shot it.
