Caption: A Tale of CP and "Heritage". The grand old CP station in West Toronto had outlived its usefulness. CP and the City of Toronto were in negotiations to restore it. The plan was for making the station once again a popular destination, this time as a Farmer's Market. But in a shocking turn of events, the project, and the discussion, never came to fruition. During the wee hours of Thursday morning, November 25, 1982, while the city was asleep, CP demolition Crews launched a raid on the venerable old structure and, in almost 'military style' has reduced the 71 year old building to rubble before anyone could yell "Holy Crap"!!!!! The Toronto Mayor (Eggleton) was infuriated, and in a letter to CP President Stinson called the act illegal, amounting to vandalism and corporate irresponsibility. But, CP considered this event mission accomplished. CP was eventually charged with demolition without a permit and failing to stop demolition when ordered. Moving in during the dead of night as in this case still has to be one of the most shocking acts carried out by this railroad even though they were up against a deadline for laying new track on the Toronto-Milton GO line, and the station was in the way.
