CP westbound #401 stopped at Cartier station. No doubt pleasantries are exchanged before the boarding crew takes the train onward onto the Nemegos Sub to Chapleau, a 135-odd miles down the line. A lot of baggage in front of the station is owned by passengers awaiting the VIA Budds, scheduled an hour or so after the 0915 departure of this freight. The station was completely done over a few years later, it is a Heritage structure, but then CP brought in the Modulars and the office and crew quarters was moved a half mile or so south at the road crossing to Cartier's east side. Power on this train is CP 6041, 5796 and 5831.

  1. Another Mooney Shot with lots of human interest. Did they even notice you taking their picture Arnold?

  2. It was(is?) a whole new world north of Sudbury. I was rather well-known around there due to the number of visits, and well received. Lineups were printed for me without asking. Coffee machine at the door, the VIA waiting room was the next door over, so washrooms and warmth and a place to make lunch if I wanted. It was odd to walk down the streets in Chapleau and have CP employees who lived in that town drive by, slow down and holler hello. I had many offers to accompany them in the second engine from Cartier to Chapleau but had to decline because either had someone with me or no way to get back without booking somewhere overnight. You could not rely on your return ride to be anywhere near what it was scheduled to be. Cartiers old crew quarters had a considerable number of train photos on the walls……With the new facility, however, times have changed. And that means…….stay clear………

  3. I too was fortunate enough to venture north of Sudbury on several occasions back in the 90′s.
I managed several round trips between Mactier, Cartier, Chapleau, White River, and Schreiber, riding along with the crew and/or in the second unit.
    Lunch pail radios !!

  4. Hopefully the North is still a different world from the south. I hope to get back up that way this fall for a bit; if you’ve not been there for awhile the Cartier Station is no longer used by CP crews, but rather a Modular just SE of there on the other side of the yard. Sure not the same for the fans. That must have been a beautiful ride thru the North Country.

  5. I last rode up to Cartier back in 2007.
Yes, I am aware of how the location has lost most of its charm.
