I can still recall it was when my 1971 Cougar was on its last legs (due to overuse) and I was wondering how I was going to scrape up for the next 'railfanning vehicle' when I came across this wreck in Simcoe. Here, all kinds of cars, many wrecked, being tossed around by the CN Hooks like they were scrap metal. It was sickening to watch, so, of course, I watched. N&W train #90 east, with NW 3659 and 3726 on the point, apparently had a gearcase cover fall off, it caught on a switch and derailed the power, one of which plunged off the Hwy 24 overpass and caught fire. The train piled up. In the consist were all kinds of new cars, many makes, mostly Fords, and it was a sad sight; save for the autoracks of Pintos, clunkers that I wouldn't get caught dead in anyway. :o) In this image, taken day after the incident, it looks to be a Maverick that is being hoisted by the crane on the right. Quite the crowd showed up to watch the cleanup, and in this photo there are quite the number of railroad workers (and a few Tall Foreheads) as well. I believe both locomotives were scrapped.

  1. It’s always neat seeing train photos from my hometown since there are so few of them out there. I grew up hearing about this incident however the only photos I’ve seen are of the charred lead unit hanging off the overpass so it’s nice to see a different perspective of this event. If you have any other photos from Simcoe I would love to see them.

  2. Aivo lives!!? Where’ya been? Camera busted?? Anyway, I do have some other images, will keep your ‘request’ in mind; who knows where the pictures are in this mess of a den……be patient. :o )

  3. Dodge pickups on the left and Ford Mustang II’s on the right…and powered by EMD…quite the mix up !

  4. Another wreck?
You’ve caught quite a few in your Railfan career.
