QUNO-1; the workhorse switcher of QUNO Corp., one of the long list of identities of the orginal Ontario Paper Co. Ltd; which has operated on the shores of the Welland Canal in Thorold South since Sept. 5, 1913; making it proudly 100 Years Old. The switcher is the former CN 7212; having arrived on this scene June 23/94 via CN #449. The paper company is still in business, it was Ontario Paper, then Que. & Ont. Pulp & Paper, then QUNO in 1982, the acq by Donohue in 1996, Abitibi-Condsolidated in 1997, Abitibi-Bowater in 2007 and is now Resolute Forest Products. The image shows QUNO-1 at crossing of Allanburg Rd just South of the plant.

  1. They used to get a huge chunk of their wood by boat/rail from the Black River forest neat Marathon.

  2. A local operation that I need to photograph one day. They still have this switcher, and a black SW1200RS.

  3. Can you imagine all the people – male and female – who have worked at that paper mill since 1913. Still is – I believe – the number one employer in Thorold.

  4. This is one I have not photographed yet. One of these days I shall get my butt out there.

  5. Actually, I lied. I photographed their really tiny engine back in ’04 I believe….gotta dig that photo out.

  6. If it initially arrived on the pulpwood train, then it was 469, not 449 ( which was the Aliquippa ore move from Dane Ont)
