Caption: Motivated somewhat by the comment by "sdfourty" a week or so back, "love those zebra stripes" got me digging out this image of 6 of 'em climbing the grade past mile 4, Dundas. In the background are remnants of the old Canada Crushed Stone plant. Powering the train westward are CN 2540, 5144, 5046, 9562, 5079 and 9418. Leader M-420(W)part of series 2500-2579 later renumbered to 3500-3579 and all off CN roster by 1998. This engine went to Carlton Trail Rwy and became their 3554. Height of trees these days has removed this vantage point from the list of decent locations to shoot from.

With very few exceptions, nose leading or trailing did not affect the lean of the stripes on CN’s motive power back in the zebra paint era. They all leaned towards the cab on the fireman’s side and away from the cab on the engineman’s side.
Nothing on rails looks better to me than a matched set of CN zebras, and who could complain about a six-pack of ‘em?. Interesting consist (nowadays at least), and I can’t help but notice the ‘evolution’ of details on the SD40′s – 5046 and 5079 are both making use of their rear number boards and are equipped with dual rear headlights, while the 5144 has the employs decals for the road number at the rear and a single rear headlight.
Great vantage point, wish it was still possible.
