Caption: Back in the late 1980s it was always nice to see something other than a trio of Widecabs leading a freight. Here we have CN 5033, 5055,5234, 9455 and 2030 westbound as seen from a favourite location on the hillside at Bayview Jct back when this viewpoint wasn't a cluttered off-limits spot like it is now.
All CN units now off roster but first one: 5033 rebuilt into CN 6010 in 1995, 5055 became UP 4750, no record in CTG so perhaps 5234 scrapped, 9455 sold to Western Rail in 2007 and the big alco went to the scrapper by 1996. The work truck? Oh, he was just some guy stopped for lunch.

I miss the SD40′s if only for the standard cabs that added variety.
CN 5234 was retired 30-Mar-1996 and sold to Helm Leasing 1997, according to the CN Cyclopedia. Helm rebuilt the unit and renumbered it HELM 6085. Though they relocated the headlight to between the number boards and the bell (likely) below the frame, removed the snow shields and added dynamic brakes, one CN feature remains; the split air reservoir on the Cndr’s side at the fuel filler. And the oh so Canadian snow steps were retained as well.
Thanks, Mike, for information as to where the 5234 ended up.
What a swell photo. Lots of power, lots of Zebras and spartan cab SD40′s. Perfect.
Thanks for the positive comment.:o) Only thing lacking is the fact it wasn’t June, and that I could sit in the grass and watch the action roll by.
