Caption: GEXR 582 is backing towards Elmira to unload four cars of Fertilizer. In a rare move, earlier that evening 582 brought 16 cars of fertilizer north from Kitchener, set off 12 cars in the siding at Waterloo, and ran around these 4 cars for the 10 mile shove to Elmira. This railway was and is still dominated by chemical tank cars, for Chemtura and Sulco Chemicals both in Elmira and receive 5 day a week service. The only other customers on this line are Home Hardware at St. Jacobs, and Commonwealth Plywood in Waterloo who both receive infrequent service.
More interesting points: The Region of Waterloo owns the line and saved it from abandonment, and CN (!)is contracted to maintain signals and track on the Waterloo spur, despite GEXR providing freight service.
