Caption: To say train movements on the Hornby- Hydro spur are rare would be an understatement, although for a short period it was often used for car storage, including in needed Expressway flat car sets. As far as actual transformer moves, maybe one every decant so. It’s funny how the entire almost 10 years that I lived in my first house just off 9th line I managed to miss 2 such moves. This I believe was the last train so far to run on the line and I only managing to catch the empty return trip. Luck was on my side this day as I was outside with my real estate agent taking photos of my house going up for sale and heard a horn where I had never heard one before. Knowing the empty cars were sitting at the hydro facility for over a week it had to be the power coming to pick them up. In this shot the two GP38’s have two covered hoppers used as buffers, a van and the empty transformer car in tow as they slowly roll along the weed chocked spur and head back to the main. The train is about to cross Britannia Road. Today the spur remains but has been unused for anything since this photo was taken.

Great catch Marcus! My neighbour’s daughter got in a car accident at the Lower Baseline crossing as she slammed on the brakes noticing it was a rail crossing! She got rear ended obviously. So I said to them that the spur was indeed rarely used.Dunno why she stopped in the first place.

I think about how many times I have driven the 407 in that area and looked to the West to see if there was ever a movement on that line… so great to see you captured it, and an interesting shot for sure
