Caption: This view is from the A-end doorway of the dual diesel generator enclosure toward the B-end baggage and supply storage area of baggage car KRC 9631 (ex-VIA 9631, exx-CN 9631, nee-CN 9250) NSC built in 1955 on train KRC 291 The Pukatawagan Mixed just minutes before departure from The Pas, MB on March 16, 2023.
As one of the two generators pounds away behind me, the hot air furnace on the right is keeping the baggage and supplies nice and warm during the trip to Puk.
I was so fortunate to be offered a personal tour of this unique mixed-train consist by a local KRC employee while it was being prepared for departure. Something completely unexpected but thoroughly appreciated!
Another great experience on my 2023 winter voyage to Churchill and return. :-)

Very nice indeed ! Look hard enough and you can see the car number 9631 and sign “The Pas Lynn Lake Service” on the B end door. Most interesting heating equipment and arrangement, but sure it is needed for keeping everything warm when it is -30 C outside. I am sure in the summer there might be a canoe, an ATV sitting in this car. I assume the coach “attendant”/trainman acts as baggage man in the car for the trip. Thanks for posting, John
Thanks for posting this view that is not normally seen.
Still sporting overhead hand holds, wooden slats on the wall and a wooden floor. Brings back memories of being banished to the baggage car when the coaches were full travelling to and from work.
Thanks for the comments guys!
The on-board crew is an all-service bunch. They handle boarding of passengers, loading of baggage/supplies, and any other duties that may be required on ‘The Mixed’.
Walking through the coach and baggage car was like a trip back to the 1970′s! The interiors of both cars remained relatively untouched since that era!
I have a few more interior shots I will try to post as they provide a glimpse into this rarely seen operation.
