Caption: The Thorold South paper run had escaped my eyes for years, and has been able to maintain a very low profile as it has been poorly documented. This is train is operated for Resolute Forest Products by Trillium Railway, and brings pulp loads from the small CN interchange yard at Allanburg to the paper plant. While the owners of the plant have changed several times over the last several decades, the CN Conigas Spur and the paper run still exists today. Fellow contributor Arnold Mooney shot this train at this location about 34 years prior, and a few changes have occurred. The growth of trees, blocking the view of the mill, is the most obvious, which seems to have been the most common change in railfanning locations over the years.

This train was entirely caught by chance, and while I was in Port Robinson waiting for CN 421 to pass as I heard its horn in the distance, another unique sounding horn sparked contest to the north. The horn clearly sounded like a Nathan M3, which was a horn choice of CN decades back, but nonetheless was succeeded by the less maintenance prone Nathan P3 and K3. On the way home, behold, there was the paper run beginning to back out of Allanburg Yard, and I quickly made my way to Thorold South. DESX 1305 (ex CN 1305) shows quite obvious clues it is a former CN unit, and the horn sound matched the description of the locomotive, as both were in production around the same time (1950s). The sight of an SW1200RS is a nice break from the constant Geeps that roam CP, CN and many of the Ontario shortlines, and even more of a break from the blandness Niagara railroading puts forth. This was an early afternoon Saturday run, however, I have no idea if the schedule is consistent.

Lucky you, I’ve never been able to catch this one. I was actually planning to get over to Port Rob today to see if I could catch anything but never did.
I’ve been to Port Robinson at least 100 times, and this is the first time I saw it, so I think it was about time! I managed to see CN 562 go down to Allanburg once, and have seen quite a few runs down the Chemical Lead. None of those occurrences really allowed for a photo though. Too dark, or forgot my camera. Doh!!!
a 524 came up from Niag this morning..2807 and 1 tank car…..just departed Snake for Niag again with a train. Things are looking up for you Daniel with all these anytime movements !
correction 422 was 2807. 524 has a 25XX
Thanks for that! Lol, if I could keep track I would. I’d be more interested if the power wasn’t a CN GE. Still plenty of interesting spur operations thankfully. I need to document those a bit more.
Great catch, Daniel. I’ve caught trains at this crossing but 3 times in probably 30 years. And it has only been by chance.
Thanks! I will be back there this Saturday around the same time probably to see if the schedule is consistent. Niagara has plenty of interesting branchline activity left. Unfortunately, very little is known on the times these trains run.
Well, Daniel you’ve given me hope for this. Dropped by here a couple times hoping to run into something. Will try again maybe on a Saturday Afternoon
And thanks Daniel, I did get it as you know appreciate it pal.
Anyone know what happened to #1?

1305 is now lettered for HOPA ( Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority ) and used to switch the old Hayes Dana plant now a transload facility at Thorold East !
