The municipality of Guelph became sole owner of the Guelph Junction Railway in 1910; which connected to the CP Galt sub 15 miles to the south. One year after, the CPR, which leased the line, constructed a station in the city by Eramosa Rd. Like most other railroad stations in the country, it outlived its' usefulness.
The structures either taken over by another concern or demolished. In 1976, the Guelph CP was home to the Chamber of Commerce and a Real Estate outfit. Not long after that, it was gone. Razed for an apartment complex. I am not sure of the date of demolition, but it was probably before 1980. Anyone ??

  1. The station came down in early 1983. It’s too bad it was torn down, it would have been the perfect boarding spot for the Guelph Junction Express.

  2. Hey, thanks, J.P. !!! And, nice meeting you!! It is sad that all over the country these buildings come down and when there is a need for them, they’re gone. However, the almighty dollar makes all these unwanted decisions for us. But, I agree with your comment; as I sit here imagining a tourist train on the siding here with coffee shop, gift shop, nice train ride; the whole bit……….

  3. The station so I was told was disassembled and taken to the south side of Galt along highway 24. Unfortunately the plans were lost to reassemble it and the foundation still sits unused today beside a Tim Hortons.

  4. What remains of the station has been found, see details in the GHRA’s Switchstand:

  5. Well, thanks for the input. I must say I am rather surprised, because all these years I thought it was the GALT CNR brick station that was to be moved to Myers Rd and Hwy 24. So since it was not, what happened to the CN Galt station??

  6. Ok. So, jyst to throw my rendition of the story provided to me by a good friend and fellow railfanner Dave Savage…the Guelph station was dismantled and pkans were to reassemble the whole station at Myers Rd. and Hwy 24 to house what has the variety store, etc today. However, some ‘miscreant’ came and stole bricks, leaving that only of the concrete foundation. These I do believe were used for the construction of the building with the variety store, hence why it gives a station like appearance in design. Glad it wasn’t stolen though…will have to update Dave.

  7. after the station came down, it was replaced by a big apartment building. I was on a Goderich snowplow one day and as we rounded the bend coming to the crossing immediately south of station location..a cement mixer was parked right on the tracks. I guess the contractors didn’t think they had to contact CPR to foul the track.. Speed was only 10mph at that spot if I recall so we were able to stop without incident.
