One of the great pastimes for train nuts like myself was wandering down to that once busy CN facility at Fort Erie and watching to see whose power would be on the daily transfers. Usually it would be Conrail, often Norfolk Southern and perhaps Chessie. But surprises abound. One of the better power combos for me, because I am a D&H fan, was this pair of RS-11s, D&H 5009 and 5005 shown here just setting foot on Canadian soil. This photo as I post it was taken just a couple of days over 30 years ago; and as of last month most of the D&H as I knew it was spun off to the NS. Life along the Susquehanna Valley in NY state will never be the same. :o( I have lost track of the travels of these units, which left the D&H probably 20 years ago; and wonder if they have met the scrapper and lost.  They were built in 1961.

  1. You sure saw some great stuff in Fort Erie over the years. I took a quick look and it appears that 5005 and 5009 were both scrapped. Too bad considering that 5009 operated pretty late in to the “CP” era. Several D&H RS11s did survive, including 5010 still in service on the Buffalo Southern.

  3. Did D&H just serve Fort Erie or did they travel the Grimsby Sub or the Conrail Line?

  4. It was just an interchange run between SK Yard in Buffalo to CN in Fort Erie.

  5. Hey Docta..the D & H only went to Ft. Erie they did not use the Grimbsy or Stamford subs past Ft Erie.
