Caption: Much of the 2000’s proved to be a rewarding time to be a railfan. A lot of the older power was still kicking around and there was still a lot of variety as far as motive power went, especially on CN. I quickly took a liking to CN’s rebuilt SD40U’s and tried to catch them when ever I could. While intermodal train 148 was the most reliable eastbound stack train on CN in Southern Ontario, the typically smaller 142 did often make an appearance. In later years it was abolished. It often seemed like 142 simply got the overflow traffic and any extra power needed to be moved back to Toronto. The Concept of the SD40U’s was to take a 1960’s locomotive and rebuild it to last a few more decades, this also included rebuilding the cab and angling the front windows to cut down the sun glare, similar to the GP9RM’s. CN would rebuild less then 30 units before deciding to turn to the second hand market for the rest of its SD40 needs. This day the sun was rapidly loosing against the incoming cloud cover as train 142 rolled through Aldershot with SD40U 6006 in the lead. Today the surviving SD40U’s spend their days deep within CN’s busy yards across the system, their mainline days now in the past.
