Caption: Just another old VIA photo, I suppose, but this location is far removed from most places today's fans would bother with. For one thing, the VIA, thanks of course to Mulroney Cuts of 1990, no longer frequents this line. VIA 6760,with 2 coaches in tow,is slowing to stop for passengers at the remote Smooth Falls Jct station. This train, from Kap to Cochrane, was once an extension of the now defunct ONR Northlander. There was just no population base to support this train, and with the government, need of money savings trumps necessity of citizens. Barely visible behind the 'waiting shack' is the reason for the Junction; the (also defunct) Mattagami Railroad line running up to the town of Smooth Rock Falls and its' once booming pulp and paper mill. Eastbound train with a western sunset made for difficult photography, but nowhere near the aggravation of dive-bombing mosquitos operating with the intensity of mad hornets. Looking at this photo, it suggests Notherners are almost immune to these pests. Not me. I hid in the car until I saw the headlight approaching. :o)

My nana was born in Timmins, and it’s the same with her. She rarely ever gets bitten. People up north really do seem to be immune to mosquitoes. As for me, I practically get eaten alive. Now if only Via trains were immune to cuts, kind of like GO trains today. While all these outback Via routes are gone, there is GO train service at least every 30 minutes on the Lakeshore lines. During some off-peak hours, those Bi-Levels get pretty empty.
Another amazing photo Arnold, that shows the lengths you went to to record the obscure trains and stations. Thanks, as always, for recording these scenes as they are now so much history.
