Caption: It is getting late and the light is getting weak as I waited out this daily Buffalo-Toronto train from a spot up and over the shared auto/railroad tunnel under the Welland Canal. I had high hopes of bagging something I had not yet done, which was CP passing CN. But, alas, I failed. A couple of minutes later along came two CN switchers and a handful of cars going the opposite direction.(Note the lit signal in the distance). Still, CP 5914, 56xx, GATX 7368 and CP 5420 made for an interesting view. That is/was Hwy 58A on the left.

I’ve always wanted to shoot from atop there, but who knows if you can anymore with tightened security at the canal.
Beauty shot! Hard to believe this is just used mainly as a siding now. I always wanted to bag the NS intermodal train to and from Dain City here but never managed to.
Great Shot Arnold….always a fascinating area with all history of trackage. GR.
The Welland Canal Diversion is a cautionary tale of Public Infrastucture Spending. This was a huge project back in the mid to late 1960′s. The father of a high school friend worked several years there for CN’s Engineering Department. Then, came Conrail, among many factors and the use of those rail lines declined. The Welland Canal isn’t very busy compared to those times of Labrador Iron Ore and Prairie Grain to Russia. That’s the problem with trying to predict the future. No One knows; least of all the politicians and bureaucrats who decide to build things with Public Dollars.
Thanks. I’m sure there are a number of viewers who have wondered why such a monster ditch was constructed seeing how little traffic is using this line these days. Have you comments as to how big a project a tunnel for GO under the canal in St. Catharines would compare? One would think they would have to start the downgrade as far west as Hwy 406 underpass…… That is, if this project ever gets under way.
